Methodology for ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2021

1. Selection of Universities

Candidate universities are selected based on two criteria. First, the candidate should either be a sports university or have sport-related unit(s). Second, the sports university or sport-related unit(s) should have published a certain number of papers recorded in the Web of Science for the past five years (actively engaging in research). In total, 460 universities with their 515 sport-related units are selected and ranked.

2. Indicators and Weights

Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including papers indexed in Web of Science, total citations, citations per paper, papers published in the top 25% journals, and the percentage of internationally collaborated papers. For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution.

In calculating the CPP score, the maximum CPP value is set as twice the average CPP for all institutions. If an institution’s CPP is higher than the maximum value, its score on CPP will be assigned as 100.

Criteria Indicator Code Weight
Research Output Papers indexed in Web of Science PUB 20%
Research Quality Citations to papers CIT 20%
Citations per paper CPP 25%
Papers published in the top 25% journals TOP 25%
International Collaboration Percentage of papers with international co-authorship IC 10%
Total 100%
