Introduction

The University of Miyazaki (UOM) was formed in October 2003 from the merger of Miyazaki University and Miyazaki Medical College. This new UOM made a fresh start with its four faculties: Education and Culture, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture, and graduate schools (master’s course and doctoral course). The UOM has about 5,600 students and 1,700staff. Taking advantage of the merger and incorporation, the UOM has been actively engaged in characteristic university reforms. In 2007, the UOM established the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Agriculture and Engineering (Doctoral Course), which is Japan’s first graduate school that integrated agriculture and engineering. In 2008,the Major in Professional Teacher Developmentof the Graduate School of Education was established. In April 2010, the Doctoral Course for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of the Graduate School of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, which integrates medical and veterinary sciences, was established for the first time in Japan.Master’s Course in the Graduate School of Engineering has adopted the double-degree system. Under our slogan, “Look at the World, Start with the Community,” the UOM will cultivate youth who are able to respond to ever-changing times and societal needs. The UOM also aim to be a university that fosters the interdisciplinary life sciences that contribute to the welfare and prosperity of humanity, and pursues science to preserve the global environment, which is the origin of all life. In accordance with these goals, the UOM disseminates characteristic advanced academic research in the field of life science, environmental science, and energy science to the world. The UOM would like to express appreciation for all the support from around the world for the Great East Japan Earthquake. We intend to give our best efforts to help overcome the difficulties of those who live in the affected areas, and to assist them in recovery and reconstruction. Miyazaki Prefecture where the UOM is situated is in southeastern of Kyushu, facing the Pacific Ocean, blessed with beautiful scenery and people as abundantly warm as the climate. Miyazaki is far-removed from the hustle and bustle of life in the big city and is perfect place to study and strengthen one’s expertise. The UOM actively accepts international students from all over the world, providing various supports toward them. Ourfaculty, staff, and students extend a sincere welcome to international students.
