Introduction

The University of Aizu was established in 1993 as the first university in Japan solely dedicated to computer science and engineering. "Computere science and engineering" is a cutting-edge research area with broad range of applications and possibilities. It is one of core areas leading to intellectual production technology. The University of Aizu is seeking individuals who think globally based in Aizu and take on new challenges in the field of computer science and engineering. The situation in Japan today is such that both the quality and quantity of computer researchers and engineers are insufficient, and there are only a limited number of people capable of supervising them. The University of Aizu recruits outstanding individuals throughout the world in order to cope with the situation and to put into practice the University's founding principles. The University seeks outstanding faculty by reviewing their achievements in their respective fields through detailed examinations, and this has resulted in over 30% of the faculty being non-Japanese, which has become one of the University's most distinctive features. Not only does this prove that computer science and engineering is viable globally, but also it illustrates the urgent need to train computer researchers and engineers in Japan. Our outstanding faculty also include Japanese educators and researchers, and both Japanese and non-Japanese researchers on campus collaborate on joint projects to make global research practically viable.
