Introduction

Tampere University of Technology (TUT) conducts research in the fields of technology and architecture and provides higher education based on this research. TUT started operating in the form of a foundation on 1 January 2010, when Finland’s new Universities Act came into force. The increased autonomy brought on by the foundation model enables further investments in, among others, new research openings and the quality of education. As an innovative and dynamic university, TUT is a significant national and international pioneer in the development of technology and a sought-after cooperation partner among the scientific community and business life. In its own fields, TUT is Finland’s most attractive research and study environment with a warm and forward-looking community spirit. Internationality is an inherent part of all activities. TUT’s scientific activities are founded on a combination of strong research of the natural sciences and technology and research related to industry and business. Many research fields play an important role in securing sustainable development and human well-being. The most extensive and established of the international leading-edge fields of research at TUT are signal processing, nanophotonics and intelligent machines. TUT’s strengths include the interaction between fundamental and applied research, extensive international networks and world-class research projects. TUT offers its students an opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. Competent Masters of Science of Technology and Architecture as well as Doctors of Technology and Philosophy graduate from TUT to work in key braches of industry, especially in the technology industries and in tasks related to the built environment. In terms of student numbers, the largest fields of study at TUT are information technology and electrical, mechanical, automation and civil engineering. The central role of technology in addressing problems related to sustainable development and ensuring human well-being is acknowledged in all the fields of study. Furthermore, all the degree programmes introduce students to entrepreneurship and the principles of business. In the fields of research and education, TUT partners with recognized national and international peer institutions, seeking to establish long-term strategic partnerships. TUT in a nutshell Established in 1965, Tampere University of Technology (TUT) has a staff of 2,000 professionals in different fields and a total 10,400 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The University employs almost 300 non-nationals and hosts some 1,300 international exchange and degree students. TUT offers 13 degree programmes and eight international Master’s degree programmes. Around 800 Masters of Science in Technology or Architecture and 80 Doctors graduate from TUT every year. In 2009, the University’s total funding amounted to EUR 154.5 million, one-third of which was research funding granted by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), companies, the Academy of Finland and the EU. Two Centres of Excellence in Research appointed by the Academy of Finland are currently operating at TUT. Since the early 1980s, research conducted at the University has spawned more than a hundred new companies.
