Introduction

The Silesian University of Technology (SUT), is the oldest technical university in the region and one of the most prestigious in Poland. It was established in 1945 as a scientific and educational facility for Upper Silesia, the most industrialized area in Poland, and one of the most industrialized in Europe. For 75 years of its history, it has always been a public institution, playing a cultural and opinion-forming role in the region. On October 30, 2019, the SUT has obtained the Research University status after being selected by the international experts during the first Ministry of Science and Higher Education competition "Excellence Initiative - Research University". 15 educational units of the University – 13 faculties, two institutes – currently offer over 50 study programmes, including the whole spectrum of engineering studies. Aside from technical programmes, candidates may also study administration, business analytics, mathematics, sociology and management – including project management – as well as foreign languages and pedagogy. The SUT occupies leading positions in both national and international rankings. It ranked 7th among technical universities and 15th among all universities in Poland in the “Perspektywy” Educational Foundation Ranking 2020. The university also took first place in Poland in the field of engineering and technical sciences - in 2016, and first place in the area of social sciences - in 2018 for publications having the greatest influence on the global perception of Polish science and continuous increase in the number of publications in the most prestigious scientific journals, and the participation of foreign co-authors, as well as citation in a given field, receiving the following awards: ELSEVIER Research Impact Leaders 2016 and ELSEVIER Research Impact Leaders 2018. The university is ranked 5th in Poland in the ranking of universities whose graduates hold the positions of CEOs of large companies. It has also been awarded the "University of Leaders" certificate three times in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Moreover, the institution was one of the first in Poland that was honoured with an “HR Excellence in Research” award, which confirms that the university operates in accordance with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. . Nowadays, SUT educates over 18,000 students at all three levels of study: Bachelor (and Engineering), Master and Doctoral studies. Those programmes are available both as full-time (nearly 13,000 full-time students) and part-time study. The Silesian University of Technology offers 19 programmes conducted in English. As a prestigious European technical university, the Silesian University of Technology hosts innovative research and development activities and educates highly professional staff for the knowledge-based society and economy.
