Introduction

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) was established in 1978 and it has about 17,000 students in undergraduate and graduate courses, the latter including PhD programmes. In recent years, our University has consolidated a great prestige as a research institution, both at the national and the international level, with well-stablished collaborations with other higher education institutions and research centres worldwide. The UIB currently ranks among the top Spanish universities in the research rankings such as the SCImago or the ISSUE rankings, and it also has a significant economic impact on the Balearic Islands. In 2011 it was awarded the Campus of International Excellence distinction by the Spanish Ministry of Education for the “Euro-Mediterranean Tourism and Water Campus (e-MTA Campus)” project, a joint initiative of the University of the Balearic Islands (coordinating institution), the University of Girona (UdG), the National Research Council (CSIC), and the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA). This project aims at consolidating the Campus’ international scope in teaching, research and knowledge transfer in its four Lines of Specialisation: Tourism Sustainibility, Water, Food and Health, and Physics, Computation and Applications. The UIB main campus is located in Mallorca, at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range, an area declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, and just a few kilometers away from the island’s finest beaches. It is also 15 minutes away from Mallorca’s international airport, which connects the island with the main European capital cities through direct flights.
