American University is located in Washington, D.C., at the top of Embassy Row. Chartered by Congress in 1893 to serve the public interest and build the nation, the university educates active citizens who apply knowledge to the most pressing concerns facing the nation and world. Students engage with leading faculty experts and world leaders, learning how to create change and address issues including the global economy,  health care, human rights and justice, diversity, the environment and sustainability, immigration, journalism’s transformation, corporate governance, and governmental reform.

The university enrolls more than 7,000 undergraduate students, 3,700 graduate and 1,700 law students, and more than 500 visiting students.  Its nearly 1,500 faculty include members of the prestigious national academies. The academic program is comprised of seven schools and colleges, including the School of Public Affairs, one of the nation’s oldest and best; the School of International Service, the world’s largest; and the Washington College of Law, known around the globe for human rights expertise. In addition to being widely recognized for its unique co-curricular and dual degree programs, Kogod School of Business has been ranked by some of the top publications in the United States.  The School of Communication has risen to prominence for new models of investigative journalism and news media, and excels as well in campaign communication and documentary film. The College of Arts and Sciences is the liberal arts foundation of the university, home to distinguished artists, scientists, educators and renowned presidential and judicial historians. The School of Professional & Extended Studies is the seventh and newest major academic unit of American University and is a vibrant center of experiential learning that provides diverse learners worldwide specialized, actionable knowledge to advance their careers, organizations, and communities.

American University takes full advantage of its location in the nation’s capital, the center of political, and increasingly, financial influence more than ever, a remarkable laboratory for applying knowledge. Faculty and students are deeply connected through research partnerships and internships to pinnacle organizations in government, business, and the nonprofit worlds.

While located in the heart of one of the world’s most influential cities, the beautiful 84-acre campus—itself an arboretum—provides an attractive collegiate setting, characterized by federal-style architecture and a striking, contemporary arts center.  The School of Communication moved into the renovated McKinley Building in 2014. Its new home features mind-blowing technology like a Sony 4K cinema projector in the 144-seat Michael Forman Theatre and state-of-the-art television and audio studios in a gleaming 2,500-square-foot media innovation lab. The new home of AU's Washington College of Law will open in 2016 and construction of East Campus, home to a new Science and Technology building and three new residence halls, began summer 2014.

As our nation faces historic challenges, examines and adjusts its role in the world, seeks to improve its public and private institutions, and explores the possibilities of a changing society and culture, American University is intellectually and geographically positioned to be an active and influential participant.  Faculty provide the intellectual and ethical leadership to shape emerging world views, forge new scholarly paths, and prepare our students to lead and serve.

The university distinguishes itself through a broad array of undergraduate and graduate programs that stem from these primary commitments:

interdisciplinary inquiry transcending traditional boundaries among academic disciplines and between administrative units

international understanding reflected in curriculum offerings, faculty research, study abroad and internship programs, student and faculty representation, and the regular presence of world leaders on campus.

  • interactive teaching providing personalized educational experiences for students, in and out of the classroom.
  • research and creative endeavors consistent with its distinctive mission, generating new knowledge beneficial to society.
  • practical application of knowledge through experiential learning, taking full advantage of the resources of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
