Founded in 1956, Tel Aviv University (TAU) is Israel’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher learning and research. It offers 125 schools and departments across the spectrum of sciences, humanities and arts, Israel's biggest biomedical research complex, and 130 research centers. Recent independent surveys showed that TAU leads the nation in the popularity and prestige of its study programs, and in the psychometric test scores (equivalent to the SAT) of applicants in the toughest fields. TAU ranks number one in Israel in the number and impact of research publications. Building on these strengths, Tel Aviv University has currently targeted three areas for further growth. These are interdisciplinary research, international scope and interactive community ties.

Interdisciplinary Research

At TAU, “interdisciplinary” is a core value of the academic culture. The breadth of expertise – combined with the university’s location in Tel Aviv, nerve center of Israeli industry, business and culture – creates ideal conditions for cross-disciplinary research programs. Recognized centers of collaborative excellence are in brain studies, nanotechnology, environmental studies, bioinformatics, cyber security, Jewish studies, and film, among others. An interdisciplinary approach has led to outstanding results in Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, cancer and heart disease research. The goal of the University is to continue providing optimal conditions for interdisciplinary collaboration through the establishment of umbrella research centers and shared equipment facilities.

International Scope

Academic collaboration at TAU is reinforced through ties with the world's leading research institutions, ranging from the NIH, NASA and Harvard to CERN and the Sorbonne. TAU's sophisticated laboratories, centers and programs draw the best post-docs and researchers from abroad, and produce graduates who are in high demand. A recent drive to expand graduate study programs taught in English has met with overwhelming response from countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and North America. Programs range from business and law to conflict resolution, security studies, trauma studies, Israel studies and music, and several are run in cooperation with top foreign institutions such as the Kellogg School of Management and Johns Hopkins.

Recently TAU opened its first two international undergraduate programs, one in liberal arts and the other in electrical engineering.

Interactive Community Ties

The University is committed to staying responsive to the needs of its students and the community at large. TAU is leading a nationwide revolution in the perception of – and accessibility to – university studies. Through its many scholarship programs, TAU brings disadvantaged, minority, new immigrant and periphery youth to the university, provides them with mentors and financial aid, and gives them every chance to succeed and inspire others.

About 1,000 student volunteers yearly gain community leadership skills and a civic spirit through dozens of social involvement programs sponsored by the University. In addition, TAU faculty and alumni shape Israel’s public agenda in advisory, managerial and diplomatic roles in the Knesset, government, defense establishment, legal system, professional organizations and NGOs.
