La Trobe University was established in 1964 as Victoria’s third university. Since inception the University has had a clear purpose: to serve the community through the relevance and inclusiveness of its research and teaching.
The University offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a broad range of disciplines. La Trobe hosts more than 29,000 students, including over 6,000 international students from more than 100 countries. The University offers a focus on high quality learning, teaching and student experience, a commitment to employment outcomes, and innovative research across science, health, engineering, arts, social science, commerce and law.
La Trobe is focused on creating opportunity for all who can benefit from higher education. The University has campuses in Melbourne city and Melbourne’s North and a network of campuses in regional Victoria (Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura, and Shepparton). La Trobe University has the largest share of regional higher education students in Victoria.

Research
La Trobe University is nationally and internationally recognised for outstanding research in fields such as biochemistry, cell biology, physics, humanities and social sciences. La Trobe researchers make a global impact through their contributions to bodies of knowledge and in applications of their discoveries. In the Australian Government's 2012 Excellence in Research Australia rankings, La Trobe was recognised as a leading research university, with 14 out of 23 broad fields in which the University was assessed rated "at or above world standard', as were 38 of the 53 specific disciplines. La Trobe has more than A$500 million new research facilities recently constructed and further research capacity expansion planned. La Trobe is an active participant in five Co-operative Research Centres, two Centres of Excellence operates innovative research centres in cancer medicine, public health and freshwater ecology. Postgraduate research degrees are offered by all Schools. Students can study towards a Masters, a Professional Doctorate or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
