Introduction

Queen Mary University of London offers an outstanding education and global research opportunities in a supportive and inspiring environment. Our students are taught by academics who are passionate about their subject. Joining Queen Mary, they experience life in one of the world's most exciting cities and all the opportunities that brings. Known for our world-leading research and high-quality teaching (Silver rating in the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework 2017), we are ranked 14th in the UK and 121st in the world (Times Higher Education World University rankings 2018). We are in the UK’s top 10 for the quality of our research (Research Excellence Framework 2014). Queen Mary is a member of the Russell Group, which represents the UK’s leading universities. Graduates from Russell Group universities are highly valued by employers, giving our students a head start in the jobs market. We are committed to developing their employability while they study with us and our undergraduate degrees have been specially designed to include careers, research and international opportunities. From 2017, most subjects have been available with a study abroad option too. We are a global university. We have 25,332 students representing more than 160 nationalities making us one of the most international universities in the world. We have more than 2,500 students studying in China for a joint degree from Queen Mary and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. We offer more than 240 undergraduate degree programmes across humanities, social sciences, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering. We also offer postgraduate law courses in Paris, France and Piraeus, Greece, and distance learning programmes in law, medicine and dentistry, and politics and international relations. From September 2017, our medics have been studying in Malta at our new medical school. In London, we have five campuses across east and central London with specialist centres for medicine and postgraduate law programmes. Set alongside the historic Regent’s Canal, our campus at Mile End makes us London’s only campus-based Russell Group university where students can live, study and socialise all in one place. Our students become a part of the dynamic East End, famed for its rich history, community spirit and thriving cultural scene. We are close to the social hubs of Shoreditch and Brick Lane, the financial centres of Canary Wharf and the City, and one Tube stop away from Stratford, home to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and one of Europe’s largest city shopping centres, Westfield Stratford City. We have a proud history of welcoming and nurturing the most talented individuals from all backgrounds. Our history is deeply connected to the capital, and can be traced to the late 19th century with the establishment of the People’s Palace, a Victorian philanthropic project designed to bring culture and entertainment to the people of the East End. We continue to work closely with our local communities today by sharing knowledge and applying our research to improve the lives of people around the world. From conducting the world’s largest community-based genetics study with an aim of improving the health of the local population, to our research into low pay in the area supporting the national Living Wage Campaign, we remain committed to our east London heritage.
