Introduction

Fu Jen Catholic University is the first university in China established by the Catholic Church. Moved by the Christian understanding of love and inspired by the high ideals of Confucian education, it adopted the name "Fu Jen" to give expression to its universal vision and mission realized through holistic education in the Chinese cultural context. Fu Jen University has a history of 90 years, and provides the country with well-educated students characterized by integrated physical, social, intellectual, aesthetic, moral, and spiritual development. The University also hopes to serve society through various additional academic programs and community services. Aided by extensive scientific research, Fu Jen is committed to the pursuit of truth and the integration of Western and Chinese cultural values so as to promote the well-being of the human family and strengthen world solidarity. Fu Jen Catholic University was founded in Beijing in 1925 by the Benedictines of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, USA at the request of the Holy See. It was opened as a single college under the name of Fu Jen Academy. The name "Fu Jen" finds its origin in the Analects, the celebrated Chinese classic by Confucius, who wrote, "I wen hui yu, I yu fu jen" (A gentleman who makes friends through literature ennobles benevolence). In 1929, the Ministry of Education officially recognized Fu Jen as a university. In 1959, the Chinese Regional Bishops' Conference, the Society of Jesus, and the Society of the Divine Word collaborated on the reestablishment of the University in Taiwan. In 1960, the Ministry of Education granted permission to restore Fu Jen in Taiwan. In 1961, the Graduate Institute of Philosophy admitted students. In 1963, the University was granted a share of the successful candidates of the University Entrance Examination and received the first freshmen of the College of Liberal Arts, Science and Engineering, and Law. For the formation of students, the University provides a well-balanced division between general education and professional training with a special emphasis on humanistic discipline, which helps students foster lofty sentiments and enrich their lives when they start their careers after graduation. Moreover, to stimulate international academic exchange and collaboration, and to promote cultural dialogue, the University has established sisterschool relationships with renowned universities worldwide. Fu Jen Catholic University is an academic community of students and teachers closely associated in fostering the growth of the whole person, on the basis of Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Holiness. Fu Jen is committed to a dialogue leading to the integration of Chinese culture and Christian faith; to academic research and the promotion of genuine knowledge; to the development of society and the advancement of humankind. Fu Jen Catholic University is a comprehensive university founded by the Holy See. Currently, the University comprises 11 colleges, namely Liberal Arts, Arts, Education, Communication, Foreign Languages, Science and Engineering, Human Ecology, Law, Social Sciences, Management, Medicine, 48 departments, offering 47 master's programs, 23 in-service master's programs, 11 Ph.D. programs, and 16 departments in the School of Continuing Education. The land capacity of the university is about 35 hectares and current student enrollment is 26,500. The university has about 339 sister schools worldwide, she is a member of Christian higher education organizations, including IFCU, ACUCA, and ASEACCU which allow the faculty and students plenty opportunities to participate in a wide range of exchange programs with institutions all over the world. Located at the metropolitan area of Taipei, the university is blessed with easy access to rich resources of the national capital as well as convenience for living. The university strives to provide students with a diversified, holistic, interdisciplinary, and international learning environment. Fu Jen Catholic University has a history of more than 90 years. Five decades after its reestablishment in Taiwan, more than 190,000 students have graduated from Fu Jen, and have contributed greatly in all fields in our society.
