Founded in 1823, Birkbeck is proud of being one of the global elite universities and part of the prestigious University of London. That’s important, but it’s not what makes us really special. Our uniqueness comes from our evening teaching and the opportunities this provides to combine study with work. This focused way of learning attracts committed students and academics, and makes studying here intense, life-changing and enjoyable.

Over 90% of our academics are research-active and many are renowned world-class experts in their fields. As well as being leading researchers, they are influential thinkers who are deeply involved in the cultural and intellectual life of London, bringing the latest ideas into their teaching. In many universities, the star researchers don’t teach undergraduates. At Birkbeck, academics want to spend time in the classroom because we see students as part of our learning community, and believe their varied experience enriches our teaching. It's no wonder Birkbeck has been consistenly ranked number one for quality of overall student experience in the UK's National Student Survey. Our students also voted us number one in London for intellectually stimulating courses in the 2014 National Student Survey.

We have five academic Schools: Arts; Business, Economics and Informatics; Law; Science; and Social Sciences, History and Philosophy. We offer more than 200 postgraduate taught and research programmes, nearly all full-time, mostly evening taught. Nearly 80 undergraduate degrees are available for full-time evening study over three years, which qualifies them for student visa status. All applications for our full-time evening undergraduate degrees are via UCAS, the UK’s central universities admissions service. Over 15,000 students study with us every year.

Birkbeck's research excellence was confirmed in the most recent assessment of UK research quality, the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which placed Birkbeck 30th in the UK for research, with 73% of our research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. Half of Birkbeck's submissions were placed in the top 20 nationally, with Psychological Sciences 5th in the UK, Earth and Environmental Sciences 6th and Biological Sciences 11th.

Our evening teaching makes us unique among UK universities, and gives students the opportunity to combine study at one of the world’s top research-intensive universities with building their future career. Many Birkbeck students study with us because they want to gain a head start in their careers when they graduate. Study alongside them, and you’ll not only learn the latest theory, but will be discussing how that theory relates to the workplace and to the wider world. You’ll also get to expand your networks, learn about different ways of working and living, and to grow through the experience and knowledge of others.

As well as learning about the professional world from other students, you can get help from Birkbeck alumni. Our graduates often say that Birkbeck changed their life, so they are passionate about us, and enjoy sharing their professional expertise with current students. When you graduate from Birkbeck, you take away more than your University of London qualification. The intensity of Birkbeck learning creates a common bond which endures beyond your studies.

Our students come to university primarily to study and improve themselves. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy student life and the culture of one of the world’s fastest-moving cities. It’s all there on your doorstep if you want to get involved. Our main campus is part of the University of London’s city centre campus, in the heart of academic London in Bloomsbury WC1. It’s a lively, student-centred place to study; we’re surrounded by other colleges, including UCL and SOAS. You can use all the sports, swimming, music and other social facilities of the University of London student centre right next door to Birkbeck. The British Library and British Museum are in Bloomsbury, and it’s just a short walk to the bars, cafes and clubs of Soho and Covent Garden.

We have all the facilities you need as a student, including access to a wealth of IT, library and other support services – all of which are geared around evening study. The library’s open late, as are the student centre and computing support. Catering services are also open in the evening so it’s easy to get something before class. Our five-floor library offers more than 400 study places plus a wide range of online resources. You can also access libraries across London and the UK, including the British Library and the University of London’s Senate House Library, next door to Birkbeck. There is a variety of accommodation at different price levels to suit all students, including rooms in the University of London intercollegiate halls of residence.

Birkbeck offers a range of scholarships, bursaries and postgraduate research studentships for international students. We’re also part of the Brazilian Government’s Science without Borders scheme and the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship scheme.

Our flexible payment system means that you can either pay your fees in full at the start of the academic year, or spread your payments in monthly instalments at no extra cost.
