The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) is counted among the best and most prolific research institutions in all of Spain. It is the destination of Galicia’s best students, as well as a growing number of foreign students hailing from everywhere from Europe and Asia to the Americas. With more than 500 years of history, it is one of the oldest universities in Spain and one that places highest in international rankings.

Taking into account the total number of people that make up the university community, the University of Santiago is the size of a small city: nearly 30,000 students served by 2,100 instructors and 1,240 administrative and service professionals. Also deserving of recognition are the nearly 1,000 people dedicated specifically to research and investigation.

In the academic sphere, the USC offers more than 50 undergraduate degrees and over one hundred doctorate and masters programs in all fields of study, always in direct correlation with concrete social demands. Add to all of this a well-rounded research infrastructure: more than 20 research centers and institutes together with a network of singular research centers in the field of Life Sciences and Technologies. This network is the core of a main project called Campus Vida that brings together qualified human resources and new research facilities and university infrastructures, recognized by the Spanish’s government with the International Campus of Excellence award.

The USC provides a student housing network, regarded among the best in Europe for its many facilities, athletic activities, and cultural services. In addition, students have access to 20 libraries and thousands of the best study locations scattered throughout the Santiago and Lugo campuses. The USC’s libraries boast a bibliographic offering of nearly 1.5 million printed books, nearly 40,000 serials and more than 50,000 electronic resources.

The USC facilities are located in two cities over a thousand years old: Santiago de Compostela, capital of Galicia and the destination of one of the world’s most important religious pilgrimage routes, and Lugo, recognized for its Roman roots conserved in its unique city wall. Both cities provide easy travel connections by various modes of transportation.
