Mason is making its mark as a great university. Located on a beautiful residential campus in Fairfax, Virginia, just 20 miles outside of Washington, D.C., Mason offers a traditional college campus where you’ll feel right at home, as well as access to the wonders of the nation's capital. With an average class size of 25-35 students and unique opportunities such as the Honors College and Living Learning Communities, students enjoy a small-school feel as well as all of the benefits of a large institution.
With an innovative liberal arts curriculum, including unique academic programs such as Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Bioengineering, Film and Video Studies, Forensic Science, and Sports Management, you can tailor your degree to your passions and meet your specific career goals. There are 76 undergraduate majors, as well as hundreds of concentrations and minors, from which to choose, in addition to pre-professional advising in fields such as law, medicine, and veterinary science.
As a research university, Mason is nationally recognized for providing both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to conduct original research along side professors who are well-known leaders in their fields. Our professors conduct groundbreaking research in areas such as cancer, climate change, international policy and politics, national and international security, the biosciences, and computer game design. Students can also study conservation biology first-hand through the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation, home to clouded leopards, red pandas, Przewalski horses, and other endangered species.
Our culture of inclusion, our multidisciplinary approach, and our global perspective will enhance your educational experience and prepare you to be a global citizen. Mason students come from all 50 states, as well as 122 countries. Within the classroom, global connections and perspectives are incorporated in all aspects of learning. Mason also offers a number of study abroad options that allow you to go abroad for a week, two weeks, a semester, or a year, even as a freshman. You can study at our campus in Songdo, Korea or at other universities around the world.
Mason educates students to become agents of positive change. Together we pursue discoveries that can make a difference in the world, and help our community thrive socially, economically, and culturally. You will have opportunities to enhance your leadership skills and advance your career both inside and outside the classroom. With D.C. right next door, you can intern during the academic year and build your resume while gaining valuable career skills and establishing a network within your career path. Internship and employment opportunities run the gamut, ranging from foreign embassies and wildlife preserves, to network news programs and global IT organizations. Mason’s Career Services office holds several job and internship fairs on campus, as well as mock interviewing and resume workshops, guest speakers from various industries and fields, and on-campus interviews with employers.
Mason students are routinely recognized with national and international scholarships and awards. Every day, Mason students can be found lobbying Congress on educational issues, pioneering outreach programs for disadvantaged children, or collecting oral histories in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Many Mason graduates continue employment at places where they interned and many alumni remain in the area to take advantage of the outstanding job market. Mason graduates, on average, have higher salaries than other graduates (SCHEV, PayScale), making Mason an excellent investment.
