Academic Ranking of World Universities

University of York
English Name: University of York
Region: Northern Europe
Country: UK
Found Year: 1963
Address: Heslington

Since its foundation in 1963, York’s commitment to academic excellence has established its global reputation.  One of just a handful of universities less than 60 years old to have featured in the World Top 100 league table, York is a high-performing, research intensive Russell Group university. The University was ranked 14th overall and 10th for the impact of our research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework .

The University believes passionately in research-led teaching to encourage creativity and critical thinking in its students and to challenge them to push the boundaries of knowledge and excel in their studies. York academics are world-leaders in their field, undertaking research with a global impact supported by an informal culture which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration.  Our work is focused around seven research themes aligned to academic strengths to meet the grand scientific, social and environmental challenges of our time. The University has ten top 100 departments in the QS World University Rankings by subject for 2016.

Specialist teams among the community of leading scholars include the Centre for Immunology and Infection, which works on Leishmaniasis, diabetes and HIV/AIDS, the largest cluster of environmental researchers in the UK, and world-leading health economists. New research facilities include the UK’s first dedicated laboratory building for atmospheric chemistry research,  a new Plasma Physics facility, the £11m Berrick Saul building housing the Humanities Research Centre  and a £75m redevelopment of our Departments of Biology and Chemistry . Our medical school – a partnership between York and the University of Hull - is rapidly gaining a reputation for world-class research and innovation based on a curriculum driven by problem based learning to produce the next generation of doctors who will lead advances in local health service delivery.

High quality research and teaching and delivering a world class student experience are central to everything York does. To that end, the University has invested £500m in its campus, almost doubling the size of its student population, engaging with industry and providing inward investment opportunities.

Projects already completed or scheduled, include:

Biology Phase 2  (open in September 2016) featuring a three-storey, purpose-built teaching and laboratory facility
The teaching and learning centre (open in September 2016) providing a variety of modern teaching spaces including a 350 seat lecture theatre, 26 seminar rooms along with study and informal meeting areas
A new International Pathway College providing Foundation and Pre-Masters courses in business, law, social sciences, science, engineering and a range of other areas (September 20160
New teaching and research buildings for the fast expanding academic disciplines of Law, Management and Computer Science (September 2016)
£50m film, post-production, theatre and TV studio facilities in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, providing a ‘production village’ designed to educate students to enter the creative industries
The flagship Ron Cooke Hub comprising research, business incubation and knowledge transfer facilities
The Catalyst, a major investment managed by York Science Park for creative and technological industries wishing to co-locate to an academic centre of excellence
York Sport Village including competition standard swimming pool, running track and a velodrome
The Piazza Learning Centre (open in September 2017) featuring a 350-seat auditorium, more than 30 high-quality, flexible learning spaces and a large flat-floor learning space, available for student activities and societies.

York’s internationalisation strategy encompasses research collaborations, strategic alliances, knowledge exchange activity, cultural exchange, expanding global opportunities for staff and students and the creation of an international campus by attracting the best students from around the world to York.  Over 40 per cent of the student body and 40 per cent of academic staff come from outside the UK, and there are active alumni groups in cities around the world. The University has developed an alumni engagement strategy to support student employability through the development of alumni professional networks, creating opportunities for internships, placements and graduate employment opportunities.  York is the first university to adopt a crowdfunding strategy to support students to raise their funds for a wide variety of projects designed to enhance their transferable skills, business case development and investment training. More than £90k has been raised to support students in less than 12 months. Our Centre for Global Programmes manages a rapidly expanding community of students participating in mobility programmes in York and across a global network of partner universities.

The University is just outside the centre of one of Europe’s most historic and beautiful cities, attracting visitors from all over the world.  The combination of an ancient city and a vibrant modern university brings great benefits to the region and University has been a catalyst in developing and accelerating the city’s international profile.  The University works in partnership with the local community, the City of York Council and inward investment agencies.  The embedding of business facilities on campus is accelerating the promotion of York’s strengths as a knowledge economy, and investment in world-class facilities acts as a magnet for inward investment to the city and region.

York is a collegiate university and has nine residential colleges. These are the focus of social, sport, leisure and welfare activity for students.  The college buildings sit alongside academic facilities in a beautiful landscaped campus on two adjacent sites located close to the city of York.  Each half of the campus features lakes, wetlands and rural walks.

The University encourages creativity, independence, enterprise and initiative and supports academic freedom and autonomy. This inclusive culture - with more than 75 per cent of the undergraduate intake from the state school and college sector - ensures everyone can achieve their best.

The University makes an enormous impact on the lives of millions of people around the world through its emphasis on social justice, scientific discovery and societal and cultural innovation. Sustained and sustainable investment in facilities enables us to build for the future and consolidate the strength of the University. York applies the highest ethical standards to all its activities and provides an environment where great minds can thrive.
