Academic Ranking of World Universities

University of York
English Name: University of York
Region: Northern Europe
Country: UK
Found Year: 1963
Address: Heslington

Since its foundation in 1963, York’s commitment to academic excellence has established its global reputation.  One of just a handful of universities less than 60 years old to have featured in the World Top 100 league table, York is a high-performing, research intensive Russell Group university. The University was ranked 14th overall and 10th for the impact of our research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. York academics are world-leaders in their field, undertaking research with a global impact supported by an informal culture which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration.  Our work is focused around seven research themes aligned to academic strengths to meet the scientific, social and environmental challenges of our time. The University has 10 top 100 departments in the QS World University Rankings by subject for 2016.

York has pioneered programmes designed to enhance students' employability, including offering multiple volunteering, internship and job placement programmes. York Futures is the latest addition to the employability portfolio. The distinctive personal development programme has been created in partnership with top graduate employers.

The flagship programme will provide our students with the skills and attributes needed to attain graduate level employment across all industries. The programme is co-delivered in partnership with employers and graduate recruiters such as GSK, PwC, Clifford Chance, NHS, Lloyds Banking Group, IBM, Aviva and Teach First.

The University has invested £500m in its campus. Investments include:

  1. 1. A £16m Biology Building that adds three new floors of teaching and laboratory space.
  2. 2. A £12.5m Environment Building that houses laboratories, teaching and learning space, as well as a living wall, solar panel system and an outdoor eco garden
  3. 3. The Spring Lane Building – a £13.8m learning and teaching facility, which provides modern teaching spaces, including a 350 seat lecture theatre and 26 seminar rooms
  4. 4. The £2.2 million York Sport Arena that provides a central, premier standard, multi-sports court for recreational and performance level sports.. The Arena adds to our extensive sports facilities at York Sport Village which include: a 25m swimming pool, 120-station gym, full-size 3G pitch and five-a-side pitches. The University also has the only velodrome in Yorkshire, a 1km cycling track and an athletics track

  6. 6. The University’s new International Pathway College (IPC) will move to the new Piazza Building when it opens in 2018.  The IPC, which welcomed its first cohort of students in 2016
  7. 7. A new retail development is also due for completion in 2018. This will include a doctors’ practice and pharmacy
  8. 8. We are investing up to £500,000 in mental health care provision over the next three years to further enhance student support services and strengthen our community partnerships in promoting positive mental well-being

York’s internationalisation strategy encompasses research collaborations, strategic alliances, knowledge exchange activity, cultural exchange, expanding global opportunities for staff and students and the creation of an international campus by attracting the best students from around the world to York.  The University was recently ranked 28th in a league table of the world’s most international universities (Time Higher Education World University Rankings 2017).

Over 25 per cent of the student body and 40 per cent of academic staff come from outside the UK. The University has developed an alumni engagement strategy to support student employability through the development of alumni professional networks, creating opportunities for internships, placements and graduate employment opportunities.  York is the first university to adopt a crowdfunding strategy to support students to raise funds for a wide variety of projects. Our Centre for Global Programmes manages a rapidly expanding community of students participating in mobility programmes in York and across the globe.

The University is at the centre of efforts to establish Yorkshire and the Humber as a thriving centre of bio-based innovation.

The university’s not for profit subsidiary, the Biorenewables Development Centre (BDC) offers expertise and support to help companies explore or scale up bio-based processes and products, and provides a funded programme of services to regional SMEs.

The University is leading a consortium of businesses, Local Enterprise Partnerships, universities and other research and innovation organisations to deliver a Government-sponsored Science and Innovation Audit across the bioeconomy of the North of England.

Medical Technologies

The York Health Economics Consortium leverages York’s expertise in Health Economics to provide consultancy and contract research services to many large medical technology and pharmaceutical companies, assessing the value of new technologies.

Digital Creativity

The £18m Digital Creativity Laboratories work with around one hundred companies involved in digital games and interactive media, including many of the large games companies.

Quantum Communications

York leads a major initiative of eight universities and several large industry partners including BT and Toshiba Europe, which aims to bring quantum communications technologies to market.  The principal focus is on developing secure quantum cryptography to combat emerging cybersecurity threats.

Local Economic Engagement

The University is closely involved in local economic development.  The Vice-Chancellor sits on the Board of the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Economic Partnership and the University runs an EU-funded capital grants scheme to help regional SMEs purchase equipment to innovate new products and proceeses.

York Festival of Ideas

Our Festival of Ideas continues to grow in popularity. The 2016 event attracted nearly 19,000 people to 188 events including talks, performances, screenings and workshops on subjects ranging from Bach to Brexit. The event involves 70 city and national partners.

York is a collegiate university and has nine residential colleges. These are the focus of social, sport, leisure and welfare activity for students.  The college buildings sit alongside academic facilities in a beautiful landscaped campus on two adjacent sites located close to the city of York.

The University is just outside the centre of one of Europe’s most historic and beautiful cities, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The University encourages creativity, independence, enterprise and initiative and supports academic freedom and autonomy, providing an environment where great minds can thrive.
