University of Portsmouth

A student-friendly waterfront city, Portsmouth is an excellent place to study and live, and many students choose to remain after they graduate. We welcomed over 8,500 new students in 2015, bringing our total student population to almost 22,000, including 3,000 international students from over 140 countries.

We teach and research across a broad range of subjects including science, technology, humanities, business and creative industries. The latest independent survey of research quality in UK universities, the Research Excellence Framework (REF), rates over 60 per cent of our research as world-leading and internationally excellent, with 96 per cent being of international standing.

In two subject areas respectively – Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, and Physics – 90 per cent and 89 per cent of all research submitted was rated as world leading and internationally excellent. This work includes neuro-oncology and neuroscience, establishing the role of genes important in developmental processes and addressing the fundamental questions in cosmology and astrophysics.

Around half of our students are on courses that lead to professional accreditation, and many more study on courses that offer real-life learning. Simulated learning environments include a mock courtroom, a newsroom, a health simulation suite, a £1m model pharmacy and a forensic flat, where criminologists work on staged crime scenes.

Our students continue to report strong levels of satisfaction in the annual National Student Survey and we are making new investments of over £22 million in improving our resources and facilities this year.

The University has opened a £14 million extension to our Eldon building, the home of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, which includes new exhibition space, workshops and a large lecture theatre. Plans are also underway for a £11 million Future Technology Centre, an exciting new space for our engineering, technology and science students to collaborate on industry-based projects.

We have also significantly invested in IT facilities and have excellent wifi, broadband, computers and virtual learning environments.

Every one of our courses has opportunities for work-related learning ranging from placements, volunteering, commercial projects or a sandwich year in a workplace relevant to their degree, and 93 per cent of our 2014 graduates are in employment or further study.

The Students’ Union, run by students for students, has over 140 clubs and societies so there really is something for everyone. The Union also offers extensive opportunities for volunteering, from being a president of a society, fundraising through raising and giving, working for a local charity, running sports programmes for local schools or mentoring others – to name a few.

Portsmouth is a compact city with a vibrant community feel, and most university buildings, shops and entertainment are within walking distance of each other.
