The University of Exeter is the fastest-rising university in both UK and world league tables. Our status hasbeen confirmed by our ranking inThe Sunday Times University Guide 2013.We now rank seventh in this league table and tenth in both The Times andThe Complete University Guide. We are ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world according to theTimes Higher Education international rankings, have recently joined the prestigious Russell Group of research intensive universities and have beennamed University of the Year 2012/13 by TheSunday Times.

The University is in the top 10 for student satisfaction, according to the 2012 National Student Survey (NSS). We rank sixth out of 121 UK higher education institutions for overall satisfaction and we’ve maintained our top 10 position every year since the survey was launched eight years ago. We now rank third in the country for student satisfaction with the quality of our teaching, up one place from last year.

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008), all our subjects were assessed as including world-leading (4*) research and nearly 90 per cent of our research was rated as being internationally recognised. Sixteen of our 31 subjects are ranked in their respective top 10, with 27 in their respective top 20. What's more, we submitted the work of 95 per cent of our eligible staff to the assessment – a much higher proportion than most other universities.

Since 2007/08, our research income has doubled and now stands at £50 million (2011/12). Our success rate with research council applications is the second highest in the Russell Group.

The University of Exeter traces its origins to schools and colleges established in the middle of the nineteenth century asa result of the energies and visions of individual educational reformers and philanthropists throughout Devon and Cornwall.

The Great Exhibition of 1851 spawned localSchools of Art and Science, which in 1868 were housed in the Albert MemorialMuseum. Enthusiasm for extra-mural studies grew and, with support from theUniversity of Cambridge, the college became in 1893 the Exeter Technical andUniversity Extension College.

In 1900 its official title was changed to theRoyal Albert Memorial College. This in turn became the University College of the South West of England in 1922 and, finally, in 1955, to great rejoicing amongst its students, the College received its Charter as the University of Exeter. Her Majesty the Queen was welcomed to the campus in the following year.

Since then the University has seen unprecedented growth that continuesto this day. The University now has over 18,500 students and in the last few years has seen an investment of over £350 million in buildings and facilitieson our campuses. This includes the Forum, a stunning £48 million centrepiece that has transformed the heart of the Streatham Campus, which was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in May 2012. This period also saw the completion of the INTO centre for international students, a new building at the Business School,refurbishment of the Geoffrey Pope building and new student residences at BirksGrange, Duryard and Lafrowda.

At our Cornwall Campus we have created the Environment and Sustainability Institute, an interdisciplinary research centre, which opened in April 2013.The Exchange, a learning and social space shared with Falmouth University has also been completed.

The University of Exeter Medical School, created after the universitiesof Exeter and Plymouth agreed to form their own medical schools following their successful 10-year partnership, accepts its first students in 2013.

At the University of Exeterwe ensure that the teaching and support we offer provides our students with theacademic excellence needed to enhance their experience with us and to boost their employability after graduation. Over 80 per cent of our students leave us with First Class or 2:1 Honours degrees. Our students demand a lot of us and we of them – we aim to make our teaching inspirational and your learning exceptional.
