Academic Ranking of World Universities

University of Exeter
English Name: University of Exeter
Region: Northern Europe
Country: United Kingdom
Found Year: 1922
Address: Prince of Wales Road

The University of Exeter is one of the highest achieving universities in the UK. Our status has been confirmed by our ranking in The Sunday Times University Guide 2013. We currently rank eighth in this league table and tenth in The Complete University Guide. We are ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education international rankings, and are a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research intensive universities.

The University is in the top 10 for student satisfaction, according to the 2013 National Student Survey (NSS). We rank 5th out of 121 UK higher education institutions for teaching quality and we’ve maintained our top 10 position every year since the survey was launched nine years ago.

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008), all our subjects were assessed as including world-leading (4*) research and nearly 90 per cent of our research was rated as being internationally recognised. Sixteen of our 31 subjects are ranked in their respective top 10, with 27 in their respective top 20. What's more, we submitted the work of 95 per cent of our eligible staff to the assessment – a much higher proportion than most other universities.

We are currently on track to achieve £60 million research income in 2013/14, a year ahead of target.

The University of Exeter traces its origins to schools and colleges established in the middle of the nineteenth century as a result of the energies and visions of individual educational reformers and philanthropists throughout Devon and Cornwall.

The Great Exhibition of 1851 spawned local Schools of Art and Science, which in 1868 were housed in the Albert Memorial Museum. Enthusiasm for extra-mural studies grew and, with support from the University of Cambridge, the college became in 1893 the Exeter Technical and University Extension College.

In 1900 its official title was changed to the Royal Albert Memorial College. This in turn became the University College of the South West of England in 1922 and, finally, in 1955, to great rejoicing amongst its students, the College received its Charter as the University of Exeter. Her Majesty the Queen was welcomed to the campus in the following year.

Since then the University has seen unprecedented growth that continues to this day. The University now has over 18,500 students and in the last few years has seen an investment of over £475 million in buildings and facilities on our campuses. This includes the Forum, a stunning £48 million centrepiece that has transformed the heart of the Streatham Campus, which was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in May 2012. This period also saw the completion of the INTO centre for international students, a new building at the Business School, refurbishment of the Geoffrey Pope building and new student residences at Birks Grange, Duryard and Lafrowda. This investment continues with the current construction of the £50 million Living Systems Building which will provide state-of-the-art facilities to further support our research and teaching.

At our Penryn Campus in Cornwall, we have created the Environment and Sustainability Institute, an interdisciplinary research centre, which opened in April 2013. Work is currently underway to construct the £5.5 million Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF) which will open in 2015.

At the University of Exeter we ensure that the teaching and support we offer provides our students with the academic excellence needed to enhance their experience with us and to boost their employability after graduation. 84 per cent of our students leave us with First Class or 2:1 Honours degrees. Our students demand a lot of us and we of them – we aim to make our teaching inspirational and your learning exceptional.
