The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a medium-sized research-intensive university with a broad teaching and research profile in the arts, sciences, and professions.  It was established in 1911 and took its first group of 184 students two years later.  It has a high-quality student profile which now totals 25,000 enrolments.  It attracts the major share of high-quality school-leaver student applicants in the State of Western Australia; in 2014, it enrolled 73.5% of top school leavers with an ATAR of 95+ and 67.0% of the school-leavers with an ATAR of 90+.  UWA is a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of leading research-intensive, comprehensive Australian universities and is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network of 16 member universities from four continents and is also a member of the Matariki network of high-quality universities across seven nations.  UWA's strong research record is reflected in an Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranking of 91th for 2013 and rankings of 26th in life sciences (highest in Australia) and in the top 75 for medical research.  Its research performance is also reflected in UWA obtaining 6.3% of the Australian Competitive Grant funds and 6.2% of the total research income funds allocated to Australian higher education institutions in 2012.  University staff members have won numerous awards for teaching and research; the most noteworthy being Professor Barry Marshall and Emeritus Professor Robin Warren who were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
