Syracuse University aspires to be a pre-eminent and inclusive student-focused research university, preparing engaged citizens, scholars, and leaders for participation in a changing global society.

As a university with the capacity to attract and engage the best scholars from around the world yet small enough to support a personalized and academically rigorous student experience, Syracuse University faculty and staff support student success by: encouraging global study, experiential learning, interdisciplinary scholarship, creativity, and entrepreneurial endeavors; balancing professional studies with an intensive liberal arts education; fostering a richly diverse and inclusive community of learning and opportunity; promoting a culture of innovation and discovery; supporting faculty, staff, and student collaboration in creative activity and research that address emerging opportunities and societal needs; and maintaining pride in our location and history as a place of access, engagement, innovation, and impact.

Syracuse University’s strength is based on the depth and breadth of its academic programs spanning the arts, sciences, and professional education. In recent years we have developed several interdisciplinary research clusters; launched signature programs in such areas as biotechnology, global enterprise technology, music industry, and sport management; and created integrated learning majors for students interested in such expanding fields as forensic science and neuroscience.

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences have engaged in history-making research as part of an international research collaboration; learned from award-winning authors; and collaborated with practitioners and communities locally and around the world. Our professional schools prepare students for success in a swiftly evolving marketplace by connecting emerging areas of strength such as business, law, and engineering with long-standing and highly visible strengths in communications and public affairs. The University’s School of Information Studies (more familiarly known as the iSchool) was among the first of its kind, and the School of Architecture one of the oldest, in the nation.

Creative exchanges occur easily across disciplines and colleges, and students with varied interests are given substantive opportunities to collaborate on entrepreneurial activity and innovations that address current and emerging challenges of the day. Interdisciplinary programs, such as the Bandier Entertainment Industries Program, Goldring Arts Journalism Program, and our cross-campus Renée Crown Honors Program and Soling Program embody this profile of breaking new scholarly ground, as professors, students, and practitioners intersect on and off campus.

Discovery and learning at Syracuse have no physical boundaries as we test ideas in the marketplace, be it through community geography or social entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and school reform, or immersions on Theatre Row or Wall Street, and partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) abroad or the Indigenous nations at home in Central New York. We take our traditions even further, aggressively connecting to the world through active engagement with community, industry, practitioners, governments, and the professions, at home and abroad.
