Introduction
National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was originally founded in Shanghai in 1896 under the name of Nanyang College, and it shares the same origin as the Jiaotong Universities in mainland China. In 1958, NCTU was re-established in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The University has been the forerunner of science and technology. Subsequently, it has laid a firm foundation for the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP), the “Silicon Valley” of Taiwan.

The University provides students with an excellent learning and research environment, outstanding teaching and research staff, a beautiful, state-of-the-art library, and of the best research facilities available. Today the University comprises 10 colleges with 21 departments that offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Science, Biological Science and Technology, Photonics, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Hakka Studies. In the meantime, NCTU boasts one of the most picturesque campuses in Taiwan, with delightful gardens with marvelous sculptures by some of Taiwan’s most prominent artists.

Over the past two years, the University has been crafting a 10-year blueprint that focuses on new directions, including taking a lead in integrating the fields of engineering, medicine and life sciences to effectively explore and deploy in biomedical technologies and in melding green energy developments with environmental imperatives, in order to make a greater contribution to the well-being of humanity.
