Brief description of the institution
Three institutions – Joseph Fourier University, Pierre Mendès-France University and Stendhal University – officially merged on January 1, 2016 to become Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), a general university which hosts 45,000 students today. Spanning the entire alpine corridor, UGA brings together higher education and research establishments. UGA is a comprehensive, global university, offering academic programs and supporting research in broad domains.
International relations have pride of place in our global university, which has a diverse and growing network of partnerships, which allows receiving more than 6,000 foreign students every year. Our academic programs are designed to provide the necessary skills for those who wish to meet the challenges of today’s world or to compete in the international job market.
Innovation and excellence also enrich our world-class research in an exceptional scientific environment with strong ties to business and industry. Our community of researchers includes experts from all over the world. UGA has 74 research laboratories working with national research bodies such as CNRS and with the area's major international facilities such as the Synchrotron and the Institut Laue Langevin. High-level research is contributing to the future wellbeing of humanity in several major areas such as: healthcare, computing and communication, the environment and new materials.
The University Joseph Fourier (UJF) featured in all major international rankings. This role will now be assumed by the UGA offering undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational-training programmes for the jobs of the future in a wide range of fields: Physics and Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, Biology, Medicine and Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology, Earth Sciences and Astronomy/Astrophysics, Environmental Studies, Geography and Territorial Science, Sports Sciences and Physical Education; Law, Economics and Business; Humanities and Social Sciences; Arts, Literature and Languages.

UGA’s graduate schools and International Master's courses, including Erasmus Mundus programmes, are world-class, with a focus on high-quality teaching and research.
UGA students benefit from state-of-the-art teaching methods at all levels. The University’s environment is firmly rooted in research and there are many opportunities to work with the latest generation of experimental and simulation equipment. Students also benefit from international courses and exchange programmes with other universities from around the world. A number of vocationally-oriented courses are being developed in partnership with a wide range of business, manufacturing and service organisations.
In the field of healthcare, UGA is improving its courses in Medicine and Pharmacy by introducing innovatory measures to make the first year of medicine fairer and more impartial, incorporating multimedia support and a tutorial system.
The UGA offers a wide range of degree programs in all disciplines, ranging from undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs, to professional degrees and certificate programs. The university is particularly focused on cutting-edge programs in fields such as energy, biotechnology and nanotechnology. Interdisciplinary programs in urban planning, digital humanities, and international human rights allow students to take advantage of the expertise of professors in multiple fields.
The UGA’s faculties produce high quality research in all disciplines, and work across disciplinary boundaries to bring innovative solutions to the important problem facing the world today. Researchers in 74 research centers, supported by national and international funding, work on timely and essential topics such as climate change, cyber security, big data and digital technologies in the health sciences. Taking advantage of its close ties to Grenoble’s thriving community of R&D innovation, and international business, the university has participated in the creation of forty start-ups, maintains patents for its cutting-edge research, and actively support students’ entrepreneurs.
UGA and its partners are actively involved in five competitiveness clusters: Minalogic, Lyon Biopôle, Tenerrdis (new energy sources), Trimatec (nuclear and environmental technologies), Axelera (chemistry and the environment) and four Carnot Institutes - LSI (Software and Intelligent Systems), Energies du Futur (Future Energy Sources), PolyNat (High-added Value for, innovative, functional, bio-sourced and flexible Materials), and LISA (Lipids for Industry SAfety and health).
Enrolment is open to all holders of secondary-school qualifications of Baccalaureate level.
