Since its establishment during the French Revolution in 1794, École Polytechnique has offered the brightest students of each generation the optimal conditions to develop their full scientific and personal potential.

 

The mission of École Polytechnique is to train high-potential scientists and future top-level international executives with strong scientific backgrounds who will play a leading role in implementing complex and innovative projects and meeting the challenges of the 21st century through careers in industry, research and public service. To keep pace with ever-increasing global competition in academics, research and innovation, École Polytechnique and its partner members of Université Paris-Saclay have decided to combine their resources and create a world-class collaborative education and research cluster.

École Polytechnique wields a substantial network of partner universities located all over the world. Its long-standing reputation of excellence, combined with the prestige of its partners, attracts world-class students and researchers to its various academic programs and to the laboratories in its cutting-edge Research Center.

École Polytechnique offers three types of academic programs: the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program, Master’s and Doctoral programs. The Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program, arguably France’s most selective and demanding program in advanced science and engineering, offers a multidisciplinary scientific education of the highest level, supplemented with courses in humanities and the arts as well as foreign languages. The Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program also develops students’ interpersonal and managerial skills through internships with major companies and in research laboratories, through experiences studying abroad, the practice of sports and participation in the numerous on-campus student clubs and organizations. 500 students are admitted in the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program each year, including 100 international students of thirty different nationalities. The competitive entrance exam can be taken after two or three years of undergraduate studies in science.

Besides the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program, École Polytechnique also offers Master’s programs for advanced scientific studies in a dozen subjects, attracting about 260 students each year - half of which are international students.

Lastly, every year 550 students (40% of which are international students) enroll in a doctoral program and conduct research in École Polytechnique’s Research Center.

 

École Polytechnique’s Research Center hosts 20 laboratories which conduct high-level research projects that extend the boundaries of knowledge and address interdisciplinary scientific, technological and societal challenges. The laboratories are equipped with some of the most advanced technical resources available today. Many of the projects are developed through strong partnerships with companies and public institutions.

École Polytechnique assists laboratories with developing their industrial relations and marketing their skills and scientific expertise to business partners. In commercializing their patents, software, and techniques, École Polytechnique plays an important role in stimulating the economy, while generating new resources and funding for the Research Center laboratories.

 

 

The university also has a number of academic and research chairs, established alongside the most renowned corporations both in France and abroad.

 

École Polytechnique fosters innovation and entrepreneurship through three Master’s programs: “Project – Innovation – Design”, “Network Industries and Digital Economy”, and “Engineering and Innovation Technologies”, as well as through support structures such as its business incubator, various associations and start-up grants, thus maximizing exchanges and networking opportunities among its students, alumni and research teams.

 

École Polytechnique not only trains scientists, it develops critical and creative minds that dare to take the necessary leaps for creating businesses, for innovating, and for inventing. It not only prepares its students to assume responsibilities, it imbues them with a sense of responsibility.
