Government scholarship


Introduction: Established by the Ministry of Education of China and implemented by China Scholarship Council. It provides 7 programs targeting different backgrounds and covers a wide variety of academic programs including but not limited to business, economics, management, education, arts, history, literature, and engineering at all levels.

Application: Usually starts from early January to the end of April

Admission: Announce by the end of July from application agency

Benefits: Free full or partial tuition, accommodation, and provide living allowance

Duration: 4-7 years for Undergraduate students, 2-5 years for Master's students, 3-6 years for Doctoral students (Preparatory Study of Chinese Language. which is about 1-2 years may be required depending on the major)

Qualified candidates:

  • Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than China and in good health.
  • Requirements of degree and age:
    High school certificate and under 25 years old for undergraduate programs
    Bachelor degree and under 35 years old for Master's degree programs
    Master's degree and under 40 years old for the doctoral programs
  • HSK or English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS) is helpful for most programs
  • Outstanding academic/working performance is a plus
  • Other requirements based on different programs.

Local government scholarship


Introduction: Varied by provinces/cities

Application: Usually starts at the beginning of the year

Admission: Depends by provinces/cities

Benefits: Usually free full or partial tuition and accommodation, may provide monthly payout

Duration: Length of the program or year round

Qualified candidates: Requests are similar to government scholarship

Confucius Institute Scholarship


Introduction: Launched by Confucius Institute Headquarters in 2009 to better facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world. It has supported nearly 30,000 students who comes from 168 countries until 2015.

Application: Regular programs start in Spring or Fall; Short-term programs are usually in Summer or Winter. At least three months in advance for applicants from Confucius Institutes.

Admission: Announced within 45 working days after validating the materials.

Benefits: Full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance expenses

Duration: varies from 4 weeks to 3 years depending on the program

Qualified candidates:

  • Non-Chinese citizenship
  • Aged between 16 and 35
  • Good health condition
  • High school or above, Bachelor's degree or its equivalent according to the program
  • HSK score is requested by different programs

University scholarship


Each school has different policy. The college scholarship usually exempts from full or part tuition fee as well as on-campus accommodation fee.

Other scholarships


There are many other scholarships as well. Such as Excellent International Student Scholarship, International Student Leader Scholarship and some scholarships from non-profit organizations.
