ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2016 Press Release

ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2016 is released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking began to publish Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009. This release contains rankings of universities in 7 engineering subjects, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Energy Science & Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

The new subject rankings maintain the use of transparent methodology and third-party data. Ranking indicators include those measures of research productivity, research with high quality, research with top quality, average global research impact, extent of international collaboration, extent of academic-corporation collaboration, researchers with global academic influences, and academic awards.

The bibliometric data is from Elsevier’s database. M'hamed El Aisati, Director of Content and Analytics at Elsevier, comments: “With students, researchers and other stakeholders taking a closer look at universities’ performance and reputations, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is taking an important step by providing a specific ranking for engineering.” He also says: “With our superior coverage of the subject, Elsevier's Scopus database and SciVal analytics are well-positioned to support SRC in helping engineering schools to understand their competitive position.” In order to provide a measure of institutions’ researchers with global influence, Elsevier specifically developed a list of Most Cited Researchers in seven ranked subjects.

In addition, ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2016 measures the significant academic achievements and recognitions an institution’s researchers have obtained, by using the AWARD indicator. Based on “IREG List of International Academic Awards”, two international awards with high recognitions were selected and used. “It is a well-founded initiative as there is ample evidence that academic awards, especially the ones with high prestige, often play a significant role in the performance evaluation of individuals and institutions.” said Dr. Jan Sadlak, President of IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence.
