MIT tops the list of universities in Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences rankings since ARWU-FIELD was published for the first time in 2007. Harvard continues to be ranked 1st in Life & Agriculture Sciences, Clinical Medicine & Pharmacy, and Social Science for the 10th year. Together, US universities hold at least 15 Top 20 positions in 4 of the 5 broad subject fields and take 9 of the Top 20 places in Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences. Leading universities from the UK, such as University of Cambridge (5 appearances in Top 20), University of Oxford (4 appearances in Top 20), and University of College London (2 appearances in Top 20), maintain strong performance in this year’s ARWU-FIELD Top 20 lists.

The Top 100 ranking table in different fields are dominated by the US and UK institutions with an increasing presence of universities from China, especially in the field of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences. For example, 27 of the ARWU-FIELD 2016 Top 100 universities in Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences are from China, rose from 20 in 2015. In other areas of the world, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia from Canada appear in the Top 100 lists of all 5 fields.
