Saint-Petersburg State University is the oldest classical university in Russia, founded by Edict of Peter the Great on January 28, 1724 and one of the leading international research and educational institution.*** Many outstanding people of science and culture have studied and worked at Saint-Petersburg State University. Seven Nobel laureates are among them: physiologist Ivan Pavlov, biologist Ilya Mechnikov, chemist and physicist Nikolay Semenov, physicists Lev Landau and Aleksandr Prokhorov, philosopher and economist Wassily Leontief, mathematician and economist Leonid Kantorovich. Recently Fields Medal was awarded to the alumnus of Saint-Petersburg State University Stanislav Smirnov.***Heads of the Russian governments Boris Schturmer, Alexander Kerensky, Vladimir Lenin and Vladimir Putin were the University graduates. Moreover, Presidents of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev not only studied, but also worked here.
